Clinical Details

Clinical and radiological findings:  This is a simple supracondylar distal femur fracture in a patient with congenital dwarfism. Femur measures around 26cm in length, THA above. While this is a simple fracture pattern, implant selection becomes a hot topic. In the hallway just before scrubbing one of my partners asked me what I was up to and I told him”fixing a supracondylar femur fx in a patient with congenital dwarfism” and he said “oh yeah, I took care of a patient with that too!”. We shared ideas, went over imaging, talked about alternative options. Moments like these make me grateful for my partners and where I work.

Surgical Discussion

Operative remarks:

In the end I opted for a locking anterolateral prox tibia plate. The bend seemed to fit well and I got a good cluster of locking screws in the distal segment. Plate needed a little tweaking but not much.
